The Wellburn Company specialises in residential, nursing and day care for the elderly (Wellburn Care Homes Limited - first registered in 1986) opened its first Home at Wellburn House, Ovingham in March 1987, with a second 30 bed Home (Whorlton Grange) with 5 Sheltered Flats attached in Newcastle City, opening following major reconstruction late in 1988.

Eighton Lodge, a further 42 bed unit opened in Low Fell (by The Angel) Gateshead, (again following extensive R & R) in May 1991. Further extensions to two of these Homes was undertaken in 1997 and Glenholme in Sunderland was added, in June of that year with considerable improvement work being undertaken there, in the following 15 months.

Ryton Towers in Gateshead was acquired on August 30th 2000, being another 42 bed unit with a full improvement programme afterwards, this was completed by May 2001.

Heatherdale at Druridge Bay in Northumberland came on board on the 20th October 2000 and a large new extension and improvement was completed there by March 2002 and that Home now totals 36 beds.

St George’s Nursing Home in Washington, Tyne & Wear was acquired at short notice in February 2001 and was yet again upgraded to a dual registered 38 bed Home, all single rooms with construction work completed by March 2002. Craghall, Jesmond (38 beds) came on stream on 27 January 2003, with the bulk of the redevelopment work completed there by the end of August 2004.

Conversion of the Sheltered Flats at Whorlton Grange and other extension work, commenced shortly afterwards and these were finished in May 2005, increasing the registration to 45.

A further Home purchase outside York with 31 Beds (Grimston Court - to be 47 all single en suite) was completed in April 2005 and Riverhead Hall, Driffield came on board at the end of January 2006 with a Registration of 34 No., but with planning permission for an extra 16 bedrooms, en suite. When Riverhead has been improved the overall registration is likely to be 45 beds, all single en suite.

The Company now has a total of 376 beds under management, with a 22 Day Care Facility at the Sunderland Home. When further works are completed to 2 of our original Homes, and those in York City and Driffield improved, the Company’s beds will total 410 approx. with day care at 30.

From the start, the Company has emphasised quality care and accommodation and the majority of the bedrooms within the Homes have always had, following major re-construction, en-suite facilities. When the above improvements are complete the % of single rooms will be over 97%, with 80% en-suite.

There are 3/4 Day Rooms per Home and these total facilities, allow for individual needs, privacy, maximum independence and dignity for the Company�s residents.

The emphasis on quality accommodation and care throughout the Company’s trading period has achieved high occupancy ratios, and the Company is a Member of the English Community Care Association and our MD, is a national Board member.

In addition he is Chairman of Care North East, which is a grouping of the larger operators and includes the Chairman of all the Local Associations in the region for the promotion and understanding of care needs in the North East and the proper funding thereof.

The Company has a well established Training Programme up to NVQ Level IV and its identity is quite simply.
